For Parents
Teaching your child algebra can be very easy if you keep the explanation simple and give your child practice exercises to allow them to immediately apply what you are teaching them. To begin with, I don't call it Algebra when explaining it to the child... at least not until they have demonstrated that they have grasped the lesson. :) I display a simple math problem that looks similar to math problems that have been seen and solved before. I then replace what would normally just be a blank line with the letter "x" but you can use any letter you wish. :)
With the math problem in front of us, I then explain it to the child like this:
"We know that some number x , plus 5 equals 25. In order to solve the problem we have to get x all by itself by taking away it's friend, the number 5."
"Now that we have taken away his friend, let's also take 5 away from the other side to keep things fair."
"The next step is to do the math! Let's see the true identity of x by solving the math problem by doing the subtraction like this..."
"Now we know that x's true identity is 20, or x = 20!"
